participating in 31 varsity programs (16 men's, 15 women's), tied for
the fourth-highest number of sports sponsored by a Football Bowl
Subdivision institution. Penn State is one of 13 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS)
institutions that reported they were self-supporting during fiscal
2015-16 (USA TODAY). Penn State annually is ranked in the Top 12 for average home attendance in eight sports, among the leaders nationally. Penn State Football has ranked in the Top 5 nationally in average home attendance 24 times since 1991. When Penn State Football plays at home, Beaver Stadium becomes the 4th largest city in Pennsylvania. With an official capacity of 106,572, Beaver Stadium is the 2nd
largest team sports venue in the nation and the 4th largest in the
world. Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour was ranked No. 11 on Forbes
"Most Powerful Women in Sports," as well as No. 24 on Forbes "Most
Powerful People in College Sports" in December, 2015. Barbour was among
four FBS NACDA AD of the Year recipients in 2016-17.
